This is another postcard of European street traffic pre-1918. Collected by my grandfather, Grover Hendricks, during his service with the US Army in France. The strangeness of being photographed is apparent by people's looks at the camera, this odd thing that entered their daily routine for just a moment. Scenes like this are intriguing to me for all the lives and stories that could have been followed, but are now only known by their appearance on a grainy postcard.

Immigrants were still arriving in small North Dakota towns at this time, and photography and videography were very new and, for many, previously unseen technologies. When people who were skilled in these activities determined they would photograph a town here, they would announce an upcoming "Picture Day" or "Movie Day", and folks would flock to town, dressed in their Sunday best. In my career in history I had the opportunity to work with and view many of them. You're absolutely right about the feeling of missing and unknown stories when studying their faces, John. I came to that realization myself, the first time I watched one. Thanks for posting this; although you don't know their stories, you do know your grandfather's, so it makes it yours as well.

Happy Trails

Thanks for the great feedback, I appreciate it. These didn't really feel like "my" pictures, so I've never considered showing them here. But after seeing the wonderful colorizing work from rvdb, it seemed like a good time to share some.

By the way, what part of North Dakota are you from? I still have family around Forest River, where my father grew up.

Russ, I'm so glad you brought these to Caedes, I think this a wonderful series, and am fascinated by the ones you have shared so far. I do hope you will consider one for the B&W challenge. Like Nik said even though you don't know the whole story, the very fact that your grandfather had something to do with preserving these for future generations is a story in itself. tigs=^..^=

My thanks to all who leave comments for my work and to those of you who like one enough to make it a favourite. To touch just one person that way makes each image worthwhile. . . . . . . . . .. . . . "The question is not what you look at, but what you see" ~ Marcel Proust

Thank you both for the nice comments. Since these are just scans of old postcards, I'm not sure if entering them in an art contest against pictures that people have actually 'worked' on is very fair. But if the consensus is to do it, I'll enter one.
