The lovely building was built in 1858-9 not far from the then city of Fredericksburg, by a Scot named John Howison. It was named after his home in Scotland and, when quite new, it was right in the thick of the Battle of Fredericksburg. Currently it is within the Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park. On a brief walk into the park, one can still see trenches and earthen bulwarks of the Confederate lines defending the city, as well as cannon sites above the trenches on the hills.

I remember seeing reenactments of this battle, in film and documentary, and I recall the Union troops perpetrated some unkindnesses on some of the populace and their homes. This gorgeous home would have been only 3 to 3-1/2 years old at the time of the battle. I checked to see if this one suffered from the Union's frustration with the battle and found that during the 2nd Battle of Fredericksburg the Union Army occupied the house killing chickens and cows, breaking dishes and engaging and used the house as a hospital. Grafitti, bayonet marks, bullet holes, and carvings remain as evidence of their occupancy. A lovely capture, Sharon, of this graceful home. -Nik

If you stare at an orange juice container because it says, "CONCENTRATE"...you might be a redneck.
