Another squirrel capture (this one was from yesterday), we have blacks and grays and some reddish brown ones around these parts. I was leaving the local gardens when this cutie scurried up a tree, which was close to where the car was parked, well you know what happened next, I had the canon T3i, and the canon 70-200mm with the kenko DGX 1X4 converter handy. I have a few more, but will space them out.

Have a great day, and thank you in advance for your comments.

Here is some information on these critters.

The black squirrels being seen around town are really eastern gray squirrels (Sciurus carolinensis) with a genetic mutation that causes excessive pigmentation or “melanism”. Biologists estimate that nationwide about one of every 10,000 gray squirrels is the black mutant. Black-phase gray squirrels are by no means a genetic mistake. Gray squirrels in New England, Pennsylvania, Michigan and other northern states were almost all black before the days of early European settlers. The black fur more readily absorbs heat from the sun’s rays providing warmth during cold northern winters; equally important, the black coloration is a defense mechanism.

Sandi, I like to agree with Richie. Don't know what else you could have done to make it look that amazed. The only remaining possibility is that it admires your new camera, lol.

Excellent and cute post. Done very well!

Regards, Cornelius.

I had to laugh at this one. He has a gray mustache, and it makes him look like he's kind of old. He reminds me of Harold Gould. LOL. Excellent capture, Sandi.

It wasn't apparent in the previous submission, but I'd swear this squirrel has a moustache. Add in the dark coloring and those long, untufted ears, and this is a breed of tree rat (I mean, I like squirrels - I avoid turning them into road pancakes whenever possible - but let's face it, they're a rodent = tree rats) I'm not familiar with. Do you have any more info for us on this guy? Sometimes the "picture is worth a thousand words" concept actually needs a few more words.

Excellent capture! I use capture because the look on his face seems momentary (and as a bit of a pun - animal, get it, lol). I just gave you the highest of marks for this - The focus is perfect, the timing is perfect. The headroom, although at first I thought was too much, makes sense with the direction of the little furry guy.

Very nicely composed with great focus. I would hate and love a quotation bubble in the corner saying what he's possibly thinking..."You lookin' at me...punk?"

You nailed the focus on this little guy. I have never seen a black squirrel before and was sure that this was a panther. With that light colored mustache, he could be in one of those "Got Milk" commercials. And I still think you charm these animals with your singing, Snow White.
