The quality is poor but thought the smoke trails was kind of cool in this one. I went to a ride and shoot with my daughter Saturday(they shoot at balloons with blanks from horseback) I did not do so well I might have a few pics. to share.

It was cold outside so all doors were closed, and I had to deal with the barn lighting, and the smoke floating in the air. :)

She might go back this weekend, and if she does I will go back again, and try again.

I find this really challenging, more than anything I have done.

Here are my settings using the Nikkor 70-200mm lens.

Focus mode AFC/ focal length 150mm/ Area Mode Matrix/ Aperture f/3.2/ Shutter speed 1/60s/ISO 1000/ WB 4170K.

This is my Manic Monday post.

Thanks for the comments, and any advice.

Wow, I never heard of "ride and shoot" events. It looks like a lot of fun but the last time I went horseback riding, I couldn't walk for three days. I should look into golf cart ride and shoot events. You had some difficult conditions to work with, Sandi. Action, lighting, smoke..though you handled them very well. That man in the blue best be careful.

Sandi, although the photographic conditions were very difficult, you've succeeded in capturing an image with the proper atmosphere. I can almost feel the tension. When the conditions are taking into account, to me there's only one conclusion possible: a good action shot and a good one for Manic Monday, my friend!

Considering the low light and the shooting done while riding you did quite well Sandi. Now-a-days when I "shoot" the birds I set the camera on sport mode because their beaks are moving so fast while munching. Perhaps it can be useful in this case.

I agree with Raj - I use my sport mode for bird shots as well - I think with difficult conditions you did very well.

I use the sports mode for football, baseball--put it on continuous and fire away. It might work well for this Tigz.
You got a good shot with this one so I wouldn't worry.

Wax-tipped blanks will release hot spots of melted wax that act almost like bullets, albeit soft ones (I remember being nailed across the helmet and face by those hot wax nodules from blanks, way back in the early 70's, while on bivouac out at Camp Pendleton, CA). The light-cooored lines in the smoke here look like they could be wax. Despite the lo-rez nature of the photo, it's a very unique and interesting capture, Sandi. Good job.

I sent this one to a close friend who is an accomplished and knowledgeable horsewoman and she said that these folks often use a blank that shoots crushed walnut shells instead of wax, which would definitely pop a balloon, and that may be the light colored lines we see in the photo. She also said that she joined our local group of ride and shoot folks and after a couple times they told her she wasn't good enough and was asked to not come back. Oy vey! I hope all the ride and shoot groups aren't that snooty. Considering what my friend is like, those people really missed out.
