...lies enough water to cover the entire state of North Dakota with 6 inches of water. That doesn't sound like much until you realize the state covers 70,704 square miles. All five Great Lakes together cover 94,000 square miles. The gates, or doors, in the spillway of Garrison Dam in North Dakota, hold back the waters of 178-mile-long Lake Sakakawea, named after the Shoshone woman who guided Lewis and Clark from the Knife River Indian villages, in north-central North Dakota, to the Pacific coast and back, in 1805 and 1806. The spillway is only a small part of the 5th largest earthen dam in the world, at 2-1/2 miles long and 210 feet high. Each gate is 40 feet wide and 29 feet high and opened only in the event of the lake level threatening to "overtop" the dam and causing a catastrophic dam failure. The gates in this photo are not actually seen, but are set behind (to the right of) each of those metal platforms between the concrete pilasters. Restricted access limited how I could shoot the gates, but I really prefer this angle, with all those receding identical shapes. The foliage growing in the rainwater is an indicator of how long it's been since the gates were opened. These are giant doors that serve a purpose much different than human passage. They maintain flood control, provide water recreation and world-class fishing (walleye and salmon), and assist with the production of hydro-electric power. And since these are doors, this is my entry in the current contest.
Thanks for the technical tips but this was shot with a 2meg point and shoot camera that I carried in my ruck while trying to stay alive in Iraq. Your points are well taken and thanks for the comments.

Nik,
Thks so much for your kind words. This image really did come out nice if I say so myself. You should have seen the original images. They were HORRIBLE! It was the HDR software that did magic on them. Pleased to make your acquaintance. I don't think we have met before. Hope I hear from you again.

I want to give you a nice welcome to caedes. You will like the people here. They are helpful, fun, interesting, and there are many who are great friends. So enjoy!! Verena

Aside from the above, I would also like to make mention of the fine gallery you have shaping up. And again, thank you ... for sharing your work behind the lens with us. :o)

Hi Nik, Thank you kindly for taking the time to view some of my recent uploads, and for your most generous comments! I always enjoy hearing how my fractals are perceived differently by others, which in turn, inspires me to keep creating them.
Thank you very much for taing the time to stop by and visit "Shallow Walk." Your comments your greatly appreciated and always welcome. thanks again for such encouraging words.

Hey...thanks for having a look and commenting on "Pennypack Creek in Fall"...I'm really glad you liked it and I really do appreciate the kind words!! You've got some great shots in your gallery...just had a look through. I really like your old, rickety building shots.
Thanks for stopping by and enjoying the Field of Wheat. I admit that I delve in the dark art of post-production improvements, to give that final push, when my camera fails slightly. Rather oddly, as I realised on the day, it was the first time in my own memory that I had ever walked through a wheat field. Strange! Maybe the image captured my surreal enjoyment of the moment... :-)
Hard work never killed anybody, but why take a chance?
Hellgill force..Not sure about getting down to it..The whole area was fenced off and the gate was marked private..these yorkshire sheep farmers with their dogs can be a feisty lot,So i thought dicretion was the better part of valour..R.
Don't argue with an idiot; people watching may not be able to tell the difference.
Ah yes, one of my favorite films of all times too, and thanks for the comparison. Stanley Kubric might disagree with your compliment though, as his ending sequence had much more color than mine.
Thank you for the compliment on "Way Down, Below the Ocean". I don't believe I've ever received one as nice as the comparison you made between my little frac and that great classic Sci-fi film!

Now you have me blushing.
Thank you for that exceptionally kind comment on "The Yolk's on You".

Hey Nik, thanks for the comment (and the laugh) on "Lime Swirl". Oh, and I know exactly what Christmas candy you talk about too-- it's the same one that's there 20 years later cause your granny won't throw it out, lol.

La Grange Point Rainbow has the top spot right now, lol. Thanks for the comment and suggestions on "UNameit"! You show just how imaginative you are by your suggested names. Thanks for playing, lol.

.......That white wall is very small but it robs your photo of so much. Cropping it out changes this one from a 4 or 5 to a 7 or 8.......))

Hoi, Nikoneer !
Thank you very much for your honest comment on 'Streets of Bourtange' !
I agree with you, the 'white wall' (infact it is a white painted house) is not very nice on this shot. However it makes part of the fortification 'Bourtange', that I would like to show to the caedes members, and visitors!
I had already cropped it as far as possible, but I prefer to
show both sides of the street, with a better perpective result, I think !
Thanks again, and I hope to see you again with your very good
constructive comments !
Regards !
John

Clark (lol), I didn't expect to be back here so soon, but I have to say thanks for your lovely comment on "Almost a Butterfly".
Remember that part where she reaches up and touches the underbelly of the alien the first time? One of my fave scenes!

OK Clark, I have no idea what movie the line was from, but I know what diner gives you the best galactic jello pizza! And only you would notice a 3-degree variation from true, lol. You have such a good eye.
Thanks for your comment on "Altered Perspective"!!

Hi Nik ... Thanks for stopping by "Calm Before The Storm". The storms on The Plains can be very fierce sometimes. I'm actually working on a much wider view of it in HDR. Hope it turns out. Glad you enjoyed it & I'll think about framing it.
"A Close Call at the Robotic Hairstylist"???? LOL, you have far too much imagination, my friend. But thanks for the comment and the chuckle on "Teeth!!"

Thanks for your comment on Two Birds in a tree. Out of the hundreds of people walking around the Painted Mud Pots area, I was the only one who noticed it, couldn't help but snap the picture and it turned out very pretty I think.

Thanks Nik for your visit and very kind comment on "Now What?" Appreciate your time in taking a look at my posts. Yes it's really a very funny picture. Have a nice day.
Hi Nikoneer- Thank you for visiting My View From My Front Porch and leaving such a lovely comment. I really do love living near those mountains and do spend a lot of time going through them getting them from different perspectives. Thanks again my friend.

Hi Nik ... Thank you for your kind words & thoughts on "10 Laps to Go". There is a horse pasture the borders the one side of a pond where I take pic's of waterfowl ... sometimes I'm lucky & the horses are close to the large pond. The gentleman that owns this place boards horses there for city folk that love horses, but don't have a place to keep the horse they own. He also provides riding lessons plus other stuff. The barn / shelter / arena is huge. Glad you enjoyed this capture. I appreciate you stopping by & the fave too.
... and thanks for your thoughts on "Songs In 'A' Minor. I had fun making this one & music was the first thing that popped into my head. Glad you enjoyed it & I appreciate the fave.
Nik, thanks for the lovely comment on "Let There Be Light!". I'm so very glad you liked it, even with the haze. I wish I could have done something about that, but there was no way. Ah well, I'll keep striving for perfection, lol.

Nik, thanks for your comment on "Going With the Flow". Now, my Greek ex-boyfriend would have agreed about This Greek is Foolish. Personally, I thoroughly enjoyed the rest of the choices you had to offer, lol. However, your comment gave me a lift when I needed it, and I thank you for that, as well! And I'm also very pleased you liked it enough to fave it.

Hey Nik, thanks for your comment on "Peek-a-boo Pumpkin". Sorry about the smaller size though. You know, I'm so used to doing fractals, I had forgotten all about sizing photos, lol. I slipped up there! Thanks for pointing that out though-- I needed a reminder.

Hey Nik....I think those ducks were PO'd at me! I wouldn't give them any privacy...I just kept taking their picture....lol! Silly birds...all I wanted was a good shot of them...is that really too much to ask? Thanks for the chuckle with your comment.

Thanks you Nik for the nice comment on "Chrstmas Arctic Style". Glad you liked it. Have seen your entry. It is wonderful and has a very good chance to be no.1

Hi Nik,
thanks for your comments on Sand & Light part III, much appreciated. I don’t have much time for wondering around with a camera and becoming a rare guest at Caedes. However I still have a passion.. Heave a great and wonderful New Year!
I thank you very much for your wonderful comments about my "Angel~1"... That photograph is very near to my heart & I'm so happy that it was appreciated. Your words were a boost of confidence for me & I am very grateful to you for taking the time & leaving your feedback.
God Bless & Happy 2010 :)

thanks for your fine commets again my friend!
As you can see I had a great time in Florida.
Also because of the opportunity to shoot lots of animals in the wild, which is very special.

Hi Nik
Thanks so much for stopping to see Wrapped in Elegance. Unfortunately no...I did not have time for a Macro....this was taken on the same field trip as the other....so I was running. Thanks for stopping in and viewing. I always appreciate your comments.

Thanks for your defence of my Ward Stone Entry. Continuing the conversation on documentary type photos and the ratings issue, I think we can just ignore those indexes because not all photographs uploaded on Caedes are for artistic purposes or destined to be desktop images. We share for the sake of friendship and information. This is one of that category! Thanks for going to bat for me. anne :-)
Tell me if you like it or don't but be sure to tell me why! I promise to always give honest and sincere (albeit gentle when necessary) critiques. MY NEW YEARS TIP for all, go have some fun with your new gear you got for Christmas. Do some things you rarely or never do. If you always shoot scenics, go shoot macros (or as close up as you can get.) Practice on different subjects, try new lighting techniques, bracket your shots (shoot the same image at different exposures and different apertures), get down low and shoot from your back, your belly, and your knees. Bend, twist, lean and climb up on things. Shoot toward the sky (carefully - blown out sunlight is NOT attractive :-) Just do something different and amaze yourself then share with us :-) Love you Caedians.
Thanks for the nice comment on "Redhead Unfolded". Although the bird's head looks ugly it is quite an impressive and colourful sight when it opens its wings like that. There was a pair of them here too. I think I have a photo of both together. May post that later.

Thank you again my friend for remniding me once more: it's not the score that counts, it's the encouragement from special people like you that that really matters!
But let me assure you that the C-index does not bother me that much. I just like to photograph and share my exeriences.
And if I can still please an audiance, then I still get my kicks!

Thank you very very much for bringing enlightenment on the Fulgorid Planthopper, I put your explanation into the post, take a look later, and I took a walk trhough the site you indicated, FANTASTIC! Thank you a lot for this also! Have beautiful days!
Waterfall in the Springtime was taken from an overlook at the top of the gorge, glad they had a wood fence since you stood right at the edge of a cliff. I try to act like the steep drop doesn't bother me but it does a little. I got about 20 more of these. The waterfall does have a name I just have to look it up.
Enjoy the cool breeze Nik!

Hi Nic, thank you for your comments on "Abbey" and as to those gray hairs - rejoice! My head is having a contest - go gray or go away, which will win! lol. Have a great weekend! ~~ John
Thanks mate..Of course i could never have got it that good with a Canon...R.

Thank you for your nice words and great comment on my 'One night in İzmir - Asansör' and adding it to your favourites. Glad you like it. Your point is true about portrait mode. Here portrait photos always get bad points. But we should not limit ourselves to landscape mode. Thanks.
Thanks for being first at commenting on my recent photo! It's been a very long time since I've submitted a photo. We just took this trip to the mountain and felt it was a somewhat worthy entry. :)
