Diary study

How do UX researchers decide when a diary study is the right method compared to other research approaches like usability testing or user interviews? I understand that diary studies are meant to capture real-life experiences over time, but Im curious about how teams determine whether the effort is worth it. For example, if a product team wants to understand long-term engagement with an app, would a diary study provide better insights than analytics data or periodic surveys?
