This is the Alexander Majors home in Kansas City, built in 1856. Majors was one of the founders of the Pony Express. The apparatus at the bottom of the steps is a covered water pump that operated with a crank handle that would have been attatched on the cog visible on the front side. I will post another shot of this house later. My great grandparents resided in a very similar house, with the same well cover out their back door, in Grenola, Kansas. That house was kept in our family till the late 1970's, at which time it was sold to a neighbor there. I stil miss that gas lighting, the fancy woodwork, and of course, granny's great home cooked meals, always cooked on a wood fired stove.
