The deadeyes are hoists consist of a combination of two pieces of hard wood with a circular groove and usually pierced with three holes. Shrouds on traditional sailboats, are attached to chainplates through them and stiffened (wrinkled) then a ride through the holes. On modern sailboats, they are replaced by turnbuckles.
