A hoist mechanism is a movement transmission constituted by two groups (or block), one fixed, the other movable, each comprising an arbitrary number of pulleys, and a rope which connects them. It is used to reduce the effort required (or multiply the force used) to bring the two groups of pulleys. They are used for example to lift heavy objects, or sailing on a boat for the sails.
