"Molo dei Bersaglieri" Trieste, Italy "In the very heart of Trieste is the Molo Bersaglieri, with the Maritime Station which has now been refurbished as a Congress Centre. The building, however, has even older origins, as remembered by the British consul to Trieste in 1872, Sir Richard Burton: Molo della Sanit (as it was known at the time), the shortest of the quays; it faces the governments maritime offices, that of the pilots (the harbour pilots and health authorities) and completely taken up by the health offices which have recently been enlarged. The quay was extended to its present size at the beginning of the last century, while the new Maritime Station was built at the end of the 1920s under the supervision, in its final stages, of Umberto Nordio. Between 1984 and 1993, part of the building was changed into a Congress Centre to encourage the development of the tourism and culture sectors in the city. Today, even the largest ocean-going liners can moor here, as do the local ferries which connect Trieste and Muggia throughout the year, and other nearby beaches in summer."
