Kraków is one of the oldest (and biggest) cities in Poland. It has been the capitol of Poland and the city of kings for many centuries before Warsaw (which is the capitol now). Well-known across Europe not only for its beautiful Royal Castle (named Wawel), City Square, huge meadow known as Błonia and numerous parks including Planty which surround the whole center, but especially for its artistic, cultural atmosphere - Kraków is considered as the city of art and beauty. The most characteristic monument (beside the Royal Castle and the statue of a dragon which used to live underneath the castle) is the Mariacki Church - the biggest building surrounding the City Square - and there you have it :) Every 12.00 am the trumpeter on the higher tower (left) blows a special melody towards every side of the world which stops without warning - legend says that this melody was first played when the city was attacked and the trumpeter wanted to alarm the citizens - the melody stopped when an enemy arrow pierced his throat.
