Wawel Royal Castle is the most famous castle in Poland. It's located in Kraków and Kraków (english: Cracow), second capitol of Poland (which was later transferred to Warsaw in XVIIth century - Warsaw is the capitol of Poland till this day), was the city of kings from XIth to XVIIth century. The castle is huge, build upon a beautiful green hill, on the shore of Poland's biggest river Wisła. This photo shows only a small part of Wawel - The Royal Cathedra viewed from the great courtyard. It's one of the most important places of worship in Poland and a place of eternal rest of Poland's most powerful kings, queens and people of culture. The Royal Cathedra is also a witness of polish history - it was regularly visited by the pope John Paul II (who, before being elected for the pope, was for a long period of time Kraków's main cardinal). Wawel has a special bell called from its founder's name, king Sigmund the Old, Sigmund’s Bell (year 1520) which rings only during important national events - it was last rung when John Paul II died and when Poland joined the European Union.
