As part of a series of photographs cataloging the drought in SW Florida, I focused my interest on Lettuce Lake Park. This is about 10 feet from the base of the observation tower (This juvenile alligator is floating where the stump is) where I took my panoramic shot of the river and inlet. I am assuming this is petrified remains of a very old cypress tree. I had the honour of meeting a botanist at Lettuce Lake two weeks ago. She shed some light on the different trees and I wish I had had the opportunity to ask her about this one. I am hoping to spot a mastodon skull partially buried in the silt, which wouldn't be unusual, since many inhabited this area only a few thousand years ago.
