The Basilica Cistern is the largest of several hundred ancient cisterns that lie beneath the city of Istanbul Turkey. The cistern was built in the 16th century during the reign of Byzantine Emperor Justinian. It is capable of holding 2,800,000 cu ft of water which was brought via aqueducts from the Belgrade Woods 12 miles away. The walls are built with 4 ft of waterproofed stone. No water shortages here.
