Beaumaris Castle (Island of Anglesey, North Wales) and the tidal dock which allowed supply ships to sail right up to its entrance. Beaumaris Castle, begun in 1295 was one of the 'iron ring' of North Wales castles built by Edward I, to stamp his authority on the Welsh. There are four layers of 'walls within walls' and 14 separate major obstacles that attackers would have to overcome, including 'murder holes' at each entrance. It was never finished as money and supplies ran out. The name is from ''beau marais' (fair marsh)
