Catlins Coast, NZ. In 1881 the passenger steamer Tararua was wrecked off this shoreline and only 20 of 151 people survived. The lighthouse was built in response to this and was operational by 1884. It was one of the last 2 wooden lighthouses to be built in New Zealand. It was automated in 1976 and is still active today. Taken with Canon 450D on a bitterly cold day and so windy I had to hold on to someone to steady myself to take this photo! A terrible place for a shipwreck.
