This is Deborah Bay again where my recent seagull photos were taken.
Had I not crept up on this sleeping gull (yes it is sleeping, not headless, and it flew away before I got any closer) I would not have read the plaque and learned that the pull-off carpark we were on was once a torpedo boat mole built for the Defender-class torpedo boat HMS Taiaroa, which was based here from 1884-92.
Taiaroa was built at Chiswick in 1883 and shipped to New Zealand, where she was assigned to the defence of Port Chalmers. I took a snap of the plaque which you can view HERE. HMS Taiaroa is thought to have been broken up when it became obsolete.
