Parekareka, the spotted shag (Stictocarbo punctatus) breed only in New Zealand.
I have posted photos of this old wharf full of birds before. The breeding colony is at the steep cliff face nearby. It was surprising today to see so many in the mid-afternoon as they are usually out at sea fishing during the day. We passed the wharf again a couple of hours later and it was all but empty so they must have gone in search of their supper.
