The late afternoon sun on the trees made a nice sight. The bridge on the left is part of State Highway 1 and is 906 metres long. Before it was built in 1956 there had been a combined rail/road bridge since 1877 which had overhead water tanks in case of fire. There is a small township at the northern end of the bridge called Glenavy which is a haven for anglers. (Population approx 140)It was named for Glenavy, Northern Ireland, the birthplace of former New Zealand Premier John Ballance.(1891-1893). This is just 3 km from the mouth of the river pictured in my other post.
(this really does look better full screen)
