This is the Maerewhenua River, a small tributary of the Waitaki River. At this point there are two branches meeting from left and right, hence the swirly bit in the middle. It was late afternoon when we stopped here today, which resulted in the contrasting light and shadow.
Here you can catch Rainbow Trout and Brown Trout between November and April (only two per day allowed). Gold was discovered in the area in 1872. Public fossicking is no longer allowed as there is a mining permit in place. There is still plenty of gold there.
Taken with Canon 450D.
