The old wharf has become a nesting colony for these Spotted Shags and the rarer (and only recently recognized as a separate species) Otago Shag, both natives of NZ, and members of the cormorant family. Last Spring about 346 nests were counted by Dr Chris Lalas who has monitored the rare birds since 1977. The Maori name for the Spotted Shag is Pārekareka
