Hanauma Bay on the Kalanianaole Highway of Oahu is formed by a volcano crater. In early days it was used by Hawaiian Royalty for fishing and recreation. Today it is a Marine Reserve and a popular snorkeling site, visited by (on average) 3000 people each day. Before entering the beach visitors are required to view a short film to learn about the marine life, preservation and safety rules for the park. Locals are very protective of this area and many visit it daily. It is free for locals and active military , and tourists are charged $7.50 to enter.

In 2016 Hanauma Bay was No. 1 on the list of America's top 10 beaches.
