Limestone Country.
Oamaru Stone, sometimes called whitestone, is a hard, compact limestone, found around Oamaru in Otago, New Zealand. There are many interesting rock formations to be seen, such as that on the left.
The other photo is of the Ngapara Flour Mill built of this limestone in 1898. It used locally mined coal. In the early 20th Century the district was a major region for wheat farming. For over 80 years from 1877 Ngapara was the terminus of a branch line railway that left the Main South Line near Oamaru. At its peak, Ngapara station had a small locomotive depot, complete with turntable, built to export agricultural produce and limestone and was used by the flour mill. Passenger services stopped in 1926. By 2016 milling had stopped as it was not economic any more, but it has been kept intact, and can be restarted if ever needed.
