Sumpter Wharf, long time nesting home of numerous cormorants, basking in the late afternoon Autumn sunshine. The birds congregating at the far end will soon be joined by more returning home from their fishing. iPhone12 Edit: in response to comments the wharf has not been open to people since 2004. The Shags (cormorants) arrived and started nesting there 10 years later. The wharf has great historic value and it has been suggested it be repaired. Cost would be enormous and the birds would be displaced. Approximately half of the total population of Otago Shag species nest here .The subspecies has only recently been discovered. Spotted Shags also live there.
