Omarama is a Maori word meaning "Place Of Light" A small town, it is renowned for its clear blue skies (due to low rainfall <400mm) - obviously not apparent on this day !

Located in the McKenzie Basin it is very close to an International Dark Sky Sanctuary and has ideal conditions for astronomy and aviation.

Gliders are often seen and it is acknowledged as the world's best mountain soaring site.
