Another Earth Observatory image, Image by Robert Simmon, Reto Stöckli, and Brian Montgomery, NASA GSFC. Taken October 10 2000 by MODIS. I curved it and did some layer masking to lighten some darker areas for detail. Aswan Dam in Egypt overflowed and the overflow was so great it overflowed the backup storage and created new lakes, the dark spots to the left of the dark ribbon near the bottom of the image are the new lakes. Well, new ten years ago. Which gets me thinking, I wonder if they are still there or have dried up? I'll get back to you on that. :) I love the colours of the desert so I didn't crop for only the new lakes.

Enjoy.

Mikel.

PS, most recent information I found was that the lakes maintained their size for a few years but then started to shrink as inflow stopped. A lot of infrastructure was built to try to take advantage of the opportunities the new lakes offered, if they dry up, that's a lot of wasted money and effort.
