Paddles stilled, we slid slowly by an island on which hundreds of juvenile Cormorants were working out their first flight maneuvres. The skeletal trees, long since barkless, formed a labrynth of stems on which the winded young birds perched like buds. Once the alarmed squawking and screeching died down, they studied us just as intently as we studied them. And so I snapped a pic.
