Since containers revolutionized the transport of goods by sea, the piers previously used for loading/discharging of cargo piecemeal have been laid up in many ports of the world. These piers are too narrow and the berths too shallow to be converted into container piers. In some ports like London, Liverpool and Hamburg for example these piers and and the port area around them have been used for building residential and office buildings. In Hamburg a large such area has been used up and it is called the Harbour City. This photo shows (better on full screen) one such pier in that area. All apartments here have a clear view over the river and harbour and what is more, the area is not far from the city centre.
