...for a customer! These gondolas cost about 30'000 Euros each. They last about 20-25 years. That's the period of time the gondolier has to make a living out of it, practically, only in summer. So, if you're in Venice and think the 80-100 Euros for a 20-30-minute ride is outrageous, please think again and show some leniency. I add close to %50 tip to their fee (and, often, they'll happily sing for you as well!). I don't mean to show off or look like a real philanthropist; I am hoping that more and more people will do likewise. Gondolas used to be the main mode of transportation in old times. Nowadays, they're only tourist attraction. It will be a pity to see these gorgeous vessels only in museums in future.
