A view of Cooktown taken from Grassy Hill back in June of 2008.
Cooktown is about 4 hours from Cairns, Queensland, on a road that is now, thankfully, paved the whole way - meaning you don't have to have a 4WD anymore to get there.
A bit of history for you: Cooktown is the site of Captain (who was actually Lieutenant at the time) Cook's first landing in Australia - there's a stone monument sitting where the actual site lies. He'd crashed into the Great Barrier Reef and lost his anchor and a couple of cannons, which now sit in the James Cook Museum in Cooktown. He spent several weeks here repairing his ship before heading home.
Grassy Hill, where I'm standing to take this picture, was the site of the first European sighting of a Kangaroo. There's a statue there to commemorate it (and, yes, I have a picture of it). Cook climbed it at some point to try and see a way out of the Great Barrier Reef.
