We drove past this spot near the end of a long drive around part of Lake Wakatipu ; the water appeared to be glowing. I insisted on stopping on the way back, although it was getting late and we were running low on fuel and had no idea when the only nearby petrol station might close... I think it was worth the risk.
This was a the shallow end of the lake where there was a river flowing into it; hence the silt was stirred up and I believe this, combined with the overcast conditions, is what cause the green "glow". Lake Wakatipu is actually the purest lake in the world outside of the antartic, the water being 99.999% pure. It is cleaner than most purified bottled water you can buy and does not conduct electricity. In fact a tour guide told us that you could use an electric drill under water with no risk of shock.
