While in Brussels we had the opportunity to visit the Atomium. They call it “The Most Astonishing Building In The World” and I must say it was almost unreal. Unfortunately it was closed but it was still a very impressive sight. Built for the 1958 Brussels World's Fair the 335-foot tall Atomium represents a cell of an iron crystal, magnified 165 billion times. Nine steel spheres 18 metres in diameter connect via tubes with escalators as long as 35 m, among the longest in Europe. Windows in the top sphere provide a panoramic view of Brussels. Other spheres have 1950s exhibitions, a restarant, souvenir shop and a dormitory for visiting students. The three upper spheres lacking vertical support are not open to the public for safety reasons. More information and pictures can be found at the official website. http://www.atomium.be/
