The spotted hyena is primarily a predator, unlike its cousins. Spotted hyenas are successful pack hunters of small to large sized ungulates and are the most abundant carnivore on the African continent. Hyenas are thought to have originated 22 million years ago from arboreal ancestors bearing similarities to the modern Banded Palm Civet. This one we caught while enjoying some rain water on the tar road. He was so close to the vehicle that I could actually hear his coarse tongue as he licked up the water. Hope you enjoy the journey through our beautiful country.
