The moon jellyfish (Aurelia aurita) is a translucent marine invertebrate famous for the four horseshoe-shaped organs, or gonads, visible through the top of its bell. These ancient creatures have drifted in the ocean for over 500 million years, predating the dinosaurs. They are composed of 95% water and lack a brain, heart, blood, or lungs. Instead, they use a "nerve net" to sense their surroundings and respond to light and touch. They are carnivores that feed on zooplankton, fish eggs, and larvae. They trap prey in a layer of mucus on their bell and use their four oral arms to move it to their mouth.
