On a foggy morning, October 13, 2009, the USS New York left the shipyard in Avondale, Louisiana, where she was built with Marines and Sailors lining her decks. Thousands of people lined the levees and Mississippi River banks waving American flags as a tribute to the more than 3,000 people who lost their lives in the 9/11 attack on the World Trade Center. The stacks of the ship were built to resemble the twin towers. Some 7 1/2 tons of steel, salvaged from the debris, were built into the ship. The ship will be based in Norfolk, Virginia, and when needed in defense of the U. S. will carry Marines and landing craft and aircraft. It took four years to build and Louisianians who took part in the construction are very proud of their work.
