This is St Mary's Tower on the site of Birkenhead Priory. The tower is what remains of Birkenhead's first parish church. The remains of The Priory (images to come) are the oldest freestanding building in Merseyside having been built in 1150.

The site is immediately next to Cammell Laird's Shipyard hence the crane.

Birkenhead is a large town (pop. 84000) directly opposite Liverpool on the other bank of The River Mersey.
