Trompe-l'oeil is an art technique that means "fools the eye". It is a way of painting that intends to make the image look like it has a third dimension. I think the OOB technique is an example.

This was one of the trompe-l'oeil paintings on the wall at the motel in Dennis, MA. I have used the technique in tole painting.
