The fireplace in this picture is one of the earliest wall fireplaces in England .. This configuration was a improvement upon the fireplace at the center of the room, the smoke in this fireplace was captured by a curved hood located on the top of the fireplace and released through two holes in the thickness of the wall. The way the smoke was released through the wall also was an improvement over the fireplaces that were placed in the center of the rooms, the smoke from these fires were released through "holes" in the roof... you can see where this could be an issue ... This fireplace is located in the White Tower on the first floor, it is believed to have been used by the King (Henry VIII) for public gatherings and formal meals ..
