The main entrance of the Tower of London is at the Byward Tower, where you'll find the Beefeaters or Yeoman Warders. The Byward Tower and Middle Tower Which is located before the Byward Tower (tomorrow’s post) was separated by the moat, which has since been filled in. The Byward Tower was built as part of the Outer Ward, which enclosed the entire inner wall therefore creating a double wall defense. The Byward Tower is said to have been built by Henry III and finished by his son, Edward I, (Longshank) Edward was the first son of Henry III. From the years 1275 to 1285 Edward I, spent over £21,000 on additions including the Byward Tower, more than his father, Henry III had spent on the Tower in his entire reign. What I enjoyed on this picture was the layers of construction, the bottom layer that was part of the original construction and the top of the tower, which was added during the reign of Henry VIII around 1532 and was restored in the 19th century. Hope you enjoy and thanks for your comments and tips….
