Bernardo O'Higgins, South American independence leader, was one of the commanders of the military forces that freed Chile from Spanish rule in the Chilean War of Independence. Together with Argentine General José de San Martín, he defeated the Spanish at the Battle of Chacabuco. Chile was proclaimed an independent republic on year later on February 12, 1818.

This 1-peso coin was minted in Santiago in 1956.
