The river Avon's tidal level is enormous, & was dammed in 1803 to maintain a constant water level for the convenience of trading merchant ships. However Avonmouth now does this trade instead, & this central area of the city is a leisure centre with places of interest, & nightclubs. During WII many old dockside warehouses etc were levelled to the ground by heavy German bombing, & in recent years yuppy housing developments have replaced the greyer parts of the old harbourside.
