This image was taken at the Yuyuan Gardens in Shanghai, China. The lush 20,000 square metre (about 5 acre) private garden was built in 1577 by Pan Yunduan, a Ming Dynasty government official for his family. His father passed away before the completion of the garden. The gardens have a storied 400-year history, haveing been delapidated with the decline of the Pan family, sold to rich merchants, destroyed during the 1800s Opium War, and finally restored in the 1950s. It is currently truly exquisite, one of the most beautiful gardens we visited during our trip to China and Japan.
