The entrance to one of four mortar batteries in sandy hook new Jersey. The building on top is a telephone booth where elevation and azimuth number would be sent then displayed to the men operating the four 12 inch mortars in this mortar pit via a chalk board. The location of where the mortars where cannot be seen but is on the left side at the end of the rails. This mortar battery was build in the 1890's and operational int ill the 1920's
