While driving through the monastery grounds I noticed this tree with white limbs that stood out against the deep blue sky and so I had to grab a few shots. I wanted to know more about this tree and learned that is a sycamore. The sycamore tree is also known as the ghost tree because of its white limbs and has the largest leaf of any tree in North America. Also, the sycamore tree has historical value. At the Brandywine Battlefield Park, there stands a sycamore known as the Lafayette Sycamore and is believed to be 300 years old. This tree protected the soldiers of General Washington during the Battle of Brandywine. Since then, the sycamore has become a symbol of hope and protection in the USA. Cuttings of this tree from Brandywine have been propagated at Longwood Gardens in Kennett Square, PA in 2017.
