A characteristic feature of Sardinia is its boulders. Often carved by windblown sand into fantastical shapes, they can be found almost everywhere. In the mountains they form huge, precarious piles, but on the coast they are more likely to form interesting islets and inlets. Here the predominant rock is pink granite, where gnarled conifers struggle to penetrate their roots.
