Charlottesville, Virginia, USA. Mr. Jefferson was meticulously detailed about all things at his beloved Monticello, recording varieties of plants and locations for them in the gardens. The gardener responsible for maintaining the gardens today has the liberty of growing a variety of plants, not limited to those of Jefferson's choosing. Each row of vegetables is marked by wood tags. This one represents one that Jefferson did plant, beginning in 1774. Being early November, most of the vegetables had been harvested, these beets the day I visited. Interesting was that in many years at Monticello, this 1000 foot long garden did not produce enough for the many dinners he hosted. Being so popular and famous, many stopped at his home to visit, straining the food supply and financial resources. There are records of his purchasing vegetables from his slaves, who grew their own vegetables on plots of land on other places on the mountain.
