This is the little critter we found out in the field 2 weeks ago. He quickly munched through his leaves and became a chrysalis. About 8 days later the chrysalis changed from jade green to clear, overnight. After it becomes clear we watch for air bubbles appearing inside it about 10 AM. From there it's usually only a few hours before it starts to shake. Eventually small slits tear open the side and with in a few seconds the monarch lurches itself free. Once out of the chrysalis, it will dry for 2-4 hours when it can be gently handled. Eventually it will fly away. But usually it seems to stay around the neighborhood.
