This is a male Indigo Bunting. Granted the composition here stinks. Could have been a tad sharper also ... nevertheless it was the "highlight" of a wonderful day.

A little background: Camera tri-pod mounted. Horizontal Pan ... locked. Vertical Pan Locked ... Center Focused manually on a Red-Wing I was interested in. The Red-Wing takes flight ... this little jewel flies into the viewfinder. A bird I had seen in the wild but once in my lifetime and that was nearly 20 years ago. Muggsy goes ape ... presses the shutter release like the rank amateur he is. The shutter clicks and the Bunting leaves. Of course the Bunting wound up in the extreme lower corner of a 10 megapixel image. The crop here uses two edges of that image.

Bottom line, Muggsy captured an Indigo Bunting ... and by God! ... he's gonna post it. :o)

Of interest: According to the Audobon Bird Guide ... "Indigo Buntings have NO blue pigment; they are actually ... BLACK, but the diffraction of light through the structure of the feathers makes them APPEAR blue." The female has none of this color but instead is a drab brown ... and NO! I didn't get a picture of the female. At that point I was looking for a stiff drink to calm my nerves.
