For those not familiar with this butterfly it is the only UK species with such a ragged wing outline. Although the upper surfaces are brightly coloured, it's underwing is almost black [with just a small cream mark that looks just like the punctuation mark - hence it's name!] and looks just like a dead leaf. Just as well because it hibernates as an adult in trees all winter so needs to escape the attention of predators!
