Hand carved from one block of jadite jade. There are two types of jade classified as gem quality - nephrite and jadite. This rich deep color is only found in jadite and is called imperial jade. It gets its rich color from the amount of chromium in the stone. The carver determines what to carve by the shape of the piece of stone and how the colors in it are layed out. Some jade has two or more colors in a piece. Seen at the Lizzardo Museum of Lapidary Art.
